Pustar raspigt

Hei! Jeg er norsk, men skriver frågen min på engelsk, så det ikke blir noen misforståelser:) guinea pig went to the vet about a week ago to get neutered. He got an infection from that, causing the area around the cut to swell up. Back to the vet, got Bactrim (antibiotics) to treat him. Now I'm looking after the pig while my girlfriend is away. Been treating him for a few days (in the meantime I had to move him to a new flat, my flat). Tonight he's been starting to make a weird sound while breathing, a hoarse wheezing sound, almost like an owl, only raspier. His eyes and nose look good and clear. I've been reading up on guinea pigs and their symptoms and possible diseases now, and I'm of course afraid it might be a URI. But as I said: eyes and nose are fine, and he's taking Bactrim, which is what I guess the vet would prescribe if it was a URI. He's eating, drinking and pooping regularly too. Actually he hadn't been drinking all day, but right now he is. Also, there has been a slight draught in this new apartment. I've been able to shut it off now, after hearing his breathing.

Any ideas what it might be? Is it likely that he got a URI even while already taking antibiotics? I'm really afraid that my girlfriend's g. pig is going to die after just a few days of my supervision:(
PS. Right now it got even raspier and louder for a while, until he suddenly made another weird sound, almost like a cat coughing up a wet hairball…

#1 & #2 - URI är kort för "Upper Respiratory Infections", bakteriell lunginflammation.

I would have gone to the vet again with him ! (and if something happen, I dont think she would blame you because if newley neutered she would have taking care of him by her self…) then you have done everything you could do for him.. it´s very tricky to have operations of Gunea Pigs…

Give him a lot of C-vitamin rich things also, like Broccoli, Parsill and so on …

I think your diagnos is correct but there's really not much more you can do, then you're already doing. Keep the piggy warm and out of draught. With the infection and neutering I belive that his imun system got weaker and that is why he's more sensitive and has got this other illness.

I've had piggies that have been wheezing a bit while breading. When so, I've just made sure that the cages isn't in any draugth, possibly put a few towels around the cages to make sure of it and then  fed the piggie with extra vitamin C. Before I've made it to the vet, the piggie has been just fine again.

**#0 URI is not the only possibility when the guinea pig has this kind of symtom. If he has breathed like this for less than a day I would not immediatly assume that it is URI.

He could have liquids in his lungs(possibly he swallowed his drink or food wrong, or maybe you dosed him his antibiotics too quickly, so a amount of it ended up in the lungs), which temporarily will make his breath sound raspy, until he coughs it up again. Has the raspy breathing continued after his coughing?

If the wheezing continues or his general state gets affected, I think you should check him up by a vet. I don't know if he could get URI while on treatment of antibiotics. I guess it's possible, as a operation weakens the immune system quite a bit. Maybe you could call an experienced vet and ask about it?

URI sometimes/often involve the guinea pig having trouble breathing. Does the breathing seem forced or does he breathe "harder"?

It could also just be a temporary thing(caused by draught or a cold) that will pass on its own. If he has URI I also think that the antibiotics should help for that too. Follow the advice #9 gave you and hopefully he will get well soon.**

Hei igjen!
Tusen takk for alle svar!

Igjen: tusen takk for all hjelp!

#11 Så bra då! :-) Det har hänt mina marsvin några gånger med. Fastän jag vet att det troligen är ofarligt blir jag lite orolig varje gång!
